Joyce (Hughes) Gibby
October 9, 1939 ~ November 20, 2023 (age 84) 84 Years Old
Joyce Hughes Gibby, age 84 was born and lived her life in Gastonia, North Carolina. She was raised in the Firestone Mill Village and was a member of the girl’s youth ball team. She attended Abernathy Elementary School, Wray Junior High and graduated from Ashley High School, Class of 1958. She was a graduate of Evans Business College.
She began her career at the lunch counter of the Eagles Department Store snack bar and wrapping department which led to her lifelong appreciation of hot dogs and professionally wrapping presents. Most of her working career was as a warper tender with various mills. Her longest tenure was with J. P. Stevens in Bessemer City, NC. She eventually became a Personnel Director of Robinson Mill, Dallas, NC. Joyce had a great sense of comic timing she was always ready with sardonic or hilarious quip.
Joyce’s interest ran the gamut from sewing, decorating, cooking, and belly dancing. Joyce loved Christmas almost as much as she loved Elvis. People were in awe of her four specially designed Christmas trees and her bounteous holiday spreads! Her greatest love was for her husband Benny of 63 years and their children, Jeff (Jennifer), Tim, and Lynn (Mike). She dearly loved doting on her grandchildren John, Emily, Sarah, Rachel, Benjamin, and Rebekah.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edward Spurgeon Hughes and Mattie Willie Suggs Hughes, her sisters Betty Hardin (Bill) and Martha Jean Watters (David), her brothers Rufus (Dorothy), Britt, James Hughes (Doris). Her nieces Kim Hardin, Glenda Posten and Nancy White and her nephews David, Doug Hardin, Larry Hughes, and Mark Gibby. She is survived by her loving and extended family and special sister-in-law Janet Hughes.
